The Dachshund, also known as the Dachshund, originated in Germany more than 300 years ago. Originally bred as a hunting dog to chase badgers and other burrowing animals, its name comes from the German words ‘dachs’ (badger) and ‘hund’ (dog). Over the course of time, different varieties of Dachshund have been developed, such as short-haired, long-haired and wire-haired, adapting to various tasks and environments.

The Dachshund is a courageous, curious and determined dog, characteristics that come from its origin as a hunter. Although small, it has a big personality and adapts well to both families and singles, being an excellent companion in homes of all kinds.

Their most distinctive feature is their long, low body, which gives them their nickname ‘dachshund’. Two sizes are available: small between 4 and 7 kg, and the Kaninchen (or toy) usually weighs less than 4 kg.

Coat smooth and close to the body.
They can be of many colours, including black and tan, brown, red, cream, and spotted combinations (harlequin).

Despite their size, Dachshunds are very brave dogs, with a strong hunting instinct. They love to run, play and explore.
They are very active and need regular exercise.
They are very loyal and protective of their family. They often become very attached to a particular person.

They are generally good with children if raised together, but because of their independent nature, it is important to teach children how to interact with them properly.

They have a life expectancy of 12 to 16 years, depending on their health and care.
